Recommended Flies & Tackle
Rods, Lines & Waders.
For salmon fishing at Gliffaes we recommend using a 15ft rod in most conditions down to a single handed rod in low water. For trout an 8½ to 9 foot rod with 4/5 wt line is perfect. Wading is essential at Gliffaes and the bottom of the river is slippery and stony, felt bottomed boots work better than studded ones. Chest waders and a wading stick are recommended over thigh waders. We also recommend a flotation vest and we have a number at the hotel if you wish to borrow one.
Please note: The hotel does not have any tackle for loan. We do have a couple of pairs of waders and Jimmy the Ghillie may be prepared to hire out fishing tackle. We do sell flies, leader, monofilament and flotant. Fishtec in Brecon (10 miles away) have a tackle shop alongside their big mail order fishing business and I am sure would despatch tackle to Gliffaes for your arrival.
Flies -Early Season
Olives predominate until the March Brown arrives in late March early April. Dark Olives are best to start and lighten up as the weather improves.
