Wine at Gliffaes

wine list

We talk them up, not mark them up.

You can often feel very intimidated when you are handed a wine list that is almost as thick as the Old Testament - where do you start? The list at Gliffaes is comprehensive rather than extensive and the wines are priced very reasonably. I work on a cash margin per bottle rather than a percentage margin, this seems fairer to me.

We take great pride in our wine list and stock over 80 wines and champagnes including a few halves. Working with our suppliers we taste everything before we buy  ( it’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it). The list is changed every 12 to 18 months and reflects wines from almost all of the wine regions around the globe. We have about 8-10 wines available by the glass at anyone time.

We try not to make a fuss out of serving a bottle of wine. We will show you your bottle, open it, give you a little to taste then providing you are happy we will pour a little in everyone’s glass and then leave you to it. We won’t be coming backwards and forwards to butt in and top up your glass. I loathe it when your bottle is moved out of reach on to a side table!

Our House Wine starts at £13.50 a bottle and 65% of the list is priced between £15-£24 a bottle. Every year we buy wine to lay down in our cellar so we have a supply of aged Claret in particular. If you are interested in seeing the Victorian cellar please do ask and I will be happy to show you around. I may be persuaded to part with a bottle not on the list. Our main suppliers are as follows;
Great Western Wine
Tanners
Bibendum
Fingal Rock
Farr Vintners

  1. At the recommendation of our close friends Tim & Julia Blackwell, we have booked for the night of Friday 16 September and would like a reservation for dinner for 2 people from 7.00pm to 7.30pm in the restaurant and a tour of your cellars as wine is our hobby. Your confirmation would be appreciated.
    Thanks and regards
