It is always a pleasure for us to recommend other places to eat close to Gliffaes and we have been sending guests to the Griffin at Felin Fach ever since it opened. But don’t just take my word for it because the 2011 edition of, ‘The Good Pub Guide’ has made the Griffin, Dining Pub of the year. There is always a good mix of locals, famlies with children and dogs, and happy couples enjoying a pint, or reading papers by the fire and, of course, eating.
We went for lunch last Friday and was very impressed with their varied locally sourced menu and with their greatly expanded wine list. There is a lot of well chosen wines and many reds with a good age to them. We had a great Spanish Grenache for £22, spicy and full of flavour, it went down far too quickly.
We only had one course each (the children had puddings of course) from the good choice on offer for lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed my Pork Belly with Faggot, Bubble & Squeak, Shallots with Thyme Jus and there were pleasing murmurs coming from my fellow diners who tucked into Sausages and Mash, bowls of Welsh Cawl and Confit Duck leg respectively. Straight forward, seasonal food done well, what more do you want? Service was swift and friendly and everything was well presented, right down to my perfect espresso. Aside from the main menu the Griffin are offering a very good set lunch currently. Two courses for £16.50 or three for £19.50, great value indeed.
Go for a walk on Llandefalle common or shoot clays at near by Woodland Park Shooting Ground (Fridays and Saturdays) and then go to the Griffin for lunch, you will not be disappointed. The Griffin is about 2 miles north of Brecon and is about 20 minutes from Gliffaes and we will be very happy to make reservations for you.
