An hour or two clay pigeon shooting is very often seen as part of a weekend at a Country House Hotel. Gliffaes is very fortunate to have Woodland Park Shooting Ground about 30 minutes away, just north of Brecon.
Clay shooting takes place on Fridays and Saturdays ( thanks to the heavy hand of the local council who only permit shooting on two days). For the the rest of the week there is a superb field archery range for you to try.
Woodland Park is run by John Butland, a more patient and knowledgeable shooting expert I have yet to meet. Even a total beginner will be breaking clays after a little careful instruction from John. The ground is laid out in a 32 acre wood with a large choice of different traps offering a variety of challenging and sporting targets. John welcomes total novices right through to experienced clay and game shooters. The ground is perfectly set up for groups of friends, small corporate teams and disabled shooters. Safety equipment, guns and ammunition are provided. Full and half-day events with refreshments can be arranged. It’s worth going just for the rock cakes and tea.
The field archery course was set up with the help of the Welsh Field Archery Association (WFAA) and has now been charted and approved by the International Field Archery Association. Woodland Park are the only professionally run field archery course in the area and have been told by the President of the WFAA that the ground is the ‘best thing that has happened for Welsh archery in years’.
I can thoroughly recommend spending time at Woodland Park, a morning here followed by lunch at the Felin Fach Griffin would make for a great day out.
