Dinner with the folk from Skillogalee Wines – Friday 10th October 2014
I am very excited to announce that we have managed to get hold of Dave and Diana Palmer all the way from the Clare Valley, South Australia to come and host a dinner in the private dining room at Gliffaes on the 10th October. The idea will be for Dave and Diana to present one of their wines with each course and talk about their wines and winemaking around the Clare Valley in general. This not going to be a dry (far from it) academic discourse on ph levels and such like but more of a romp through the vineyards and the viticultural year.
A bit of background on Skillogalee Wines
When Dave and Diana Palmer left the UK, it was supposed to be for a three-year stint in Papua New Guinea where Dave had found a job. Six years later, work took them on to Canberra, three years further on Dave had begun his own business.
By this point Skillogalee had already entered their lives, mainly because they’d drunk plenty of it with the eldest son of the owners. Being on the inside track they heard the winery was for sale….so naturally they sold the house and sports car, packed up the kids and the cat and moved to South Australia.
What drew them to this corner of the Clare Valley? Beyond the wines, it was possibly the mature, established vineyards, beautifully contoured and equipped to produce everything from aromatic Riesling and Gewurztraminer to full-flavoured Cabernet and Shiraz plus lusciously sweet liqueur Muscat.
Skillogalee was given its name by Lancashire born explorer John Horrocks after a troubled expedition into the Flinders Ranges when skillogalee – a Celtic name for a thin gruel – was all they had left to eat. Have a look at their website.
Wine and Dinner
Karl, the head chef will certainly not be serving up ‘thin gruel’ and my initial thoughts are as follows;
Canapes – served with a glass of Riesling
Staters – served with Gewurtztraminer
Main course – accompanied with the Basket Pressed The Cabernets
Pudding – Liqueur muscat
Cheese – a little more of The Cabernets or some of Dave’s Shiraz perhaps?

We have but 16 places available for what promises to be a great evening of good food and wine and for those who have come to Gliffaes wine dinners before will know this already.
Price per head to include canapes, wines, dinner, cheese and coffee £75 (TBC)
Timings: Gather at 8pm for dinner at 8.30pm
