We are very lucky and really rather pleased to have persuaded South African wine maker, Ken Forrester, to come to our Brecon Hotel, Gliffaes, to give a tutored tasting of his fabulous wines over a delicious dinner prepared by Karl, the head chef on Monday 13th November 2017.
Let me introduce you to Ken
Without the industrious efforts of men like Ken Forrester, South African Chenin Blanc might be scarcely more than a footnote to the country’s recent winemaking history – a workhorse grape responsible for vast amounts of fairly unremarkable white wine. Thankfully, this Zambian born former restauranteur saw beyond the grape’s obvious quaffability, and Ken now known as, ‘Mr Chenin’ and his wines such as the FMC have elevated South African Chenin to classic status. The Helderberg vineyards Ken discovered also contained what were at the time the only plantings of Grenache in Stellenbosch, dating back to 1953, and helped create a unique SA blend of Shiraz and Grenache, which now finds expression in his Rhone style wines like ‘The Renegade’ and ‘The Gypsy’. Both of which score 4 out 5 red stars in the John Platter South African Wine Guide.
We will certainly be drinking his iconic FMC – old vine chenin harvested fully ripe, remarkably rich with fruit and spice notes ranging from apricot & peach to hints of cinnamon and ginger. And I am already looking forward to having some of Ken’s ‘The Gypsy‘, grenache led Rhone blend, think dark spices, vanilla and concentrated plummy red fruit with soft tannins. I am thinking this will go well with some local venison.
At present we have not decided on the menu but it will consist of 4-5 courses with a different glass of Ken’s very fine wine with each course, with the food prepared to highlight the wines. The cost will be £80 per head which includes wine before dinner and a glass with each course. Places are limited and if you would like to book please send me an email , or call us on 01874 730 371
Here at our luxury Brecon hotel, we have done many winemaker dinners and they have always proved extremely popular events. I hope you might wish to come along and I would certainly consider booking a room or a taxi!
