- This course is for you - If you have never picked up a fishing rod in your life.
- This course is for you – If you have always longed to learn the art of fly fishing and to learn the river craft and natural history that is all part of fly fishing.
- This course is for you - If you fancy 3 days in the beautiful countryside of the Brecon Beacons in the hands of a fully qualified instructor.
- This course is for you – If you want to be able to go out into the world and be confident in your ability to cast a fly and catch a trout, anywhere.

Here is an outline of what is covered over the three days.
Introduction to fly fishing equipment and how to set it up, Rod, Reel & Line
Knots and leaders.
Casting practice, basic overhead.
Fishing wets flies downstream.
Casting practice and how to shoot your fly line.
Entomology, recognising trout food and choose flies to match it.
Fly fishing tuition, Nymph fishing.
Fly fishing tuition demonstration of dry fly fishing techniques.
Fly fishing practice with individual tuition.

Costs, Terms and Conditions
The cost of the course is £275 this includes loan of all the tackle you need (except waders although we maybe able to supply some waders – please enquire), lunch everyday and some refreshments whilst on the river. This cost does not include your accommodation; this fee is for the instruction only. We have done this so you may choose what sort of room you wish to stay in.
The courses run over three days and we suggest you arrive the night before as we will start on the first day at 10am. You will spend three nights with us if you arrive the night before and depart on the last day of instruction. Of course, you may stay longer if you wish. There will be no more than six students per course. Courses are suitable for anyone aged from 12 upwards.
Full payment for the course is required on booking and no refund will be given on cancellation unless we can re-sell your place on the course. Gliffaes reserves the right to cancel the course if there is not sufficient interest or conditions prevent fishing. A full refund will be given in these instances. Courses are open to a maximum of two non-residents. There will be no more than six people on each course. We will send out details of course insurance with your confirmation and it will be up to you if you choose to take the cover.
What should I bring with me?
Apart from a sense of humour and willingness to learn, all you need to bring is:
- Rain coat (darker the colour the better)
- Sun cream
- Sweater or fleece
- Small pen knife or nail clippers
- Note book and pencil
- Small rucksack to carry things down to the river
- Stout shoes

Gliffaes Hotel has been taking care of fishermen and women for years and makes for a most comfortable base for a fishing break. Any non-fishing partner will find that there is plenty to see and do at Gliffaes and in the surrounding countryside of the Brecon Beacons National Park and anyone attending one of our courses will be entitled to 10% off our room rates. Frank Williams in an APGAI* qualified fly fishing instructor with a passion for fly fishing the river Usk. He loves to share his knowledge of fly fishing, which he has built up over many years. His style of instruction is clear and uncomplicated and he is a firm believer that fly fishing is about having fun and appreciating the unique view of nature that this engaging sport provides.
