What you really want is access to varied and challenging fly fishing on an exciting stretch of water in some of the most beautiful countryside in Great Britain. You want the chance to test your wits and skill fishing for wild brown trout and salmon in a fast flowing river.
18th June 2008 - Fishing Update
We have had four salmon landed and one lost over the last two days. Ranging in size from 8.5 lbs to 10lbs. So clearly the water is just perfect. Drop everything grab your salmon rod and make you way over to the Usk.
Yesterday a 28lbs salmon was caught on the Usk just a few miles downstream of Gliffaes.

And I expect that you would also like to make sure that if you have a n0n-fishing companion they are well taken care of, after all you may have to convince them to come away on your fishing trip.
If you do not have access to fishing on a river or stream it can be difficult in our crowded country to find somewhere to fly fish other than a lake full of rainbow trout. Ever tried telling a non fishing friend that a day on the side of an old gravel pit would be fun?
Don't despair, you can have immediate access to two and a half miles of prime wild brown trout and salmon water on the River Usk (and many miles more close by) here at Gliffaes. Relax knowing that there is plenty to occupy your partner; riding, walking or just sitting on our terrace with a book and a watchful eye on you while you fish the river below the hotel.
Gliffaes is a hotel for fishermen. Situated 150 feet above the River Usk in the Brecon Beacons National Park the location is stunning and below the hotel, just a couple of minutes walk away, is the fishing.
Immediately below the hotel we have a mile of left bank fishing, divided into three beats, with weekday access to a further mile and a half of fishing . A short drive up river we have another three quarters of a mile of double bank fishing know as Llandetty. If that is not enough you can fish many miles of both the River Wye and Usk catchments with the Wye and Usk Passport.
While you are with us you will be most comfortable and well cared for, after all we have been looking after fishermen since 1948. If your partner does not want to sit on the river bank and watch the dippers and kingfishers then there are plenty of other distractions . Good locally souced food, an extensive wine list and a comfortable room you can be assured of.
Take a few minutes now to explore the rest of the site to re-assure yourself that Gliffaes is the place for your next fishing trip. Have a look at our rooms, find out more about dining here or learn more about the fishing using the menu on the left or read on....
Salmon Pool Beat - Fast broken water leading into good salmon lies followed by deep (too deep even for wading in the middle) holding water especially for big brownies. Finally it ends with a swift smooth run leaving our water.
Middle Beat - Fast falling and many large boulders providing exciting runs over the entire length for brown trout. A wading stick and chest waders highly recommended here.
Top Beat - More fast flowing water and interesting wider flatter section with more boulders forming testing runs and lies. Two other high water salmon lies.

Green Drive - Mon to Fri only
One and half mile stretch of fascinating and wild water running
through almost a rocky gully. Lightly fished as the challenging
wading adds another dimension to your day out.
3/4 mile both banks split in half ; top half smooth and deep water holding many good sized trout. The lower section is more accessible with a number of good salmon lies and is also holds the occasional sea trout.
Find out how we allocate beats and what to do if you want to fish but do not want to stay.
Both is the simple answer. If nothing is rising fishing a nymph upstream can be productive or a wet fly downstream.
This link will take you through to the Wye and Usk Foundation's River check web page. From there click on the 'Brecon' dot on the map for a live feed on the river height and colour. Zero marks low summer flow.
