Fishing Courses At Gliffaes 2016
We have been running fly-fishing courses at our hotel here in the Brecon Beacons for more than ten years and were awarded Fishing Hotel of 2015 by the Good Hotel Guide.
What courses do we offer?
If you are a beginner learning to fish at Gliffaes, the Usk will spoil you; this section of the Usk is one of the most beautiful stretches of river in the country and is home to a healthy stock of wild brown trout. No experience and No equipment required.
On the other hand, if you are already have some experience but are looking to build upon your dry fly technique, brush up on the tactics that will help you catch fish in fast-running water and to learn to fish with a nymph, or fish ‘the duo’ (a combination of a nymph and a dry fly on the same leader), then the General Improvers River Fly Fishing Course is for you. Non-residents most welcome.

All courses are led by Frank Williams, an APGAI qualified fly fishing instructor (Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructor). Frank’s style of instruction is clear and uncomplicated. The cost of the course is payable on booking and in the event of you being forced to cancel we will only refund the cost if we can re-sell your place on the course. Where will I be staying?
Gliffaes Country House Hotel sits above the banks of the River Usk, surrounded by beautiful grounds. You will be well cared for in one of our luxurious rooms. With delicious locally sourced food and an extensive wine list, you can be sure of a relaxing stay.
just a quick note to say thanks for the fishing course at Gliffaes. We had a really good time, learned a lot from you and even managed to catch a few fish. On the Sunday we were just about to leave, as usual- one last cast….. I was watching Robert, he did a really good cast with the French leader- he was getting good at that, I watched it dip and he caught a nice fish- a perfect ending (and roast beef and Yorkshire puddings for lunch)!
What we really appreciated was that you definitely helped us improve our fishing and showed us some new techniques, showed us that they work and did it in a friendly and enthusiastic way, even when we got in all sorts of knots with our leaders and ended up in a big mess. It’s an achievement in itself to keep a teenager interested for 3 days!
Anyway, thanks a lot, hope to see you again some time, if you’re ever at the Oostvoornse Meer let me know.
All the best,
Jeff & Robert Barrow – July 2015
