Fly Fishing Tackle & Flies
All You Need for Fly Fishing in Wales
For a perfectly planned fly fishing holiday at Gliffaes we recommend the following fishing equipment to really maximise your time with us on the river:
Rods, Lines & Waders
For salmon fishing at Gliffaes we recommend using a 15ft rod in most conditions down to a single-handed rod in low water. For trout an 8½ to 9 foot rod with 4/5 wt line is perfect.
To ensure safety on all of our fishing weekends, wading is essential at Gliffaes. The bottom of the river is slippery and stony, and felt bottomed boots work better than studded ones. Chest waders and a wading stick are recommended over thigh waders. We also recommend a flotation vest and have a number at the hotel if you wish to borrow one.
Please note: The hotel does not have any tackle on site available for loan. We do have a couple of pairs of waders and our ghillies may be prepared to hire out fishing tackle.
Fishtec in Brecon (10 miles away) have a tackle shop alongside their big mail order fishing business and with advance notice would likely be able to dispatch tackle to Gliffaes for your arrival. We do sell flies, leader, monofilament and flotant – please contact us or ask at reception for further details.
Flies – Early Season
Olives predominate until March, Brown arrives in late March early April. Dark Olives are best to start and lighten up as the weather improves.
We have more comprehensive information and advice about flies available here, as well as a good supply of flies for sale at the hotel.
