Hay-on-Wye - Second Hand Book Capital of the World

Hay- on-Wye is about 25 minutes from Gliffaes and is well worth a visit if you are staying with us. Hay is a small town on the river Wye that has not been homogenised into a "Standard British Town" with its rows of national identakit  shops and supermarkets.  What you will find instead is a collection of pretty streets lined with book shops, print shops and other curiosities.  Long may it remain.  If you are feeling fit the ride to Hay via bike is terrific.

The Hay Festival

Every year over the last weekend of May and the first week of June the town comes alive for the now world famous, Hay Literature Festival. Authors, film makers, musicians, broadcasters converge on the town for ten days of talks, shows, discussions, screenings, walks and book signings.  The cast is international and eclectic  and always boasts big name authors, politicians and broadcasters.  There is always something for everyone, children included.

Gliffaes makes a great base 'to do' the festival from, within easy striking distance but far enough away to escape the crowds at the end of the day.  Tickets for the shows can be bought on line via the festival website once the programme has been published.

Find out more about Hay from the town's very useful website.

One shop well worth a visit amongst all the book shops is  'The Great English Outdoors', a collection of things I have seldom seen anywhere else.
