One of the best spin offs from the £10 million pound investment made by the Wye and Usk Foundation on restoring the two river systems is the conception of the Wye and Usk Passport. This scheme enables you to access over a 100 miles of some the finest and unspoilt game and coarse fishing in the UK with the minimum of fuss. To find out more about the scheme and how to book a beat please have a look at their website or ask for a copy of the passport when you get to Gliffaes.
Just north of Brecon or about 12 miles from here lies Gludy Lake, a beautiful privately owned lake which can offer a different experience as you can fish from a boat or from the bank. Although the web site says you have to book the whole lake. We have negotiated the following deal for 2008 for Gliffaes residents; acharge £50 per rod for a day ticket & £35 for a half day.
If the river is unfishable nearby Talybont Reservoir could be an alternative. It offers bank fishing for brown trout and day tickets can be bought from the machine in the car park.
This reservoir is where the Usk flows from and is about 30 miles away with dramatic views of the western edge of the Brecon Beacons or the Carmathan Fans. An excellent trout fishery, permits are available from a machine located near the dam wall.
There are Pike, Perch, Roach, Bream and Eels in the lake. Except for the under 16's you will need a day permit, available from Lakeside Shop. Fishing is only from boats which can be hired from the same shop. Llangorse is only about 5 miles from Gliffaes.
