Painting at Gliffaes

The beautiful parts of the country always attract artists and here in the Brecon Beacons National Park we have a rich seam of artists attracted to the hills, the moors, the rivers and above all the light and space. Veronica Gibson is one such artist and she would like to pass on her skills to those keen to learn more.

Veronica was awarded honours in her degree at Canterbury school of Art. She has been teaching for many years and
her enthusiasm and energy is infectious.

Veronica paints directly from the landscape, finding this the only real way to capture the essence and spirit of the landscape. Using palette  knife and brush, her demonstrations are unforgettable. She will go out in all weathers and travels widely. Have a look at some of her work.

The grounds of Gliffaes Hotel with the river at the bottom of the valley and mountains as a backdrop make this an inspiring place to learn to paint.

Who is this course aimed at?

The course is suitable for those who have some experience of painting and drawing: although, a keen beginner who is willing to explore using different materials is welcome.

What sort of things will I do?

The day will run from 10am - 5pm with a decent break for lunch. Work will be A4 size in order to produce a collection of studies. One final piece in A3 size, incorporating a variety of the techniques that have been learnt will also be attempted.

The course will include - Tonal study in paint. Oil painting with a palette knife - Impasto. Expressive mark making in paint including Scraffito.   Colour, light and mood,    Dry brush technique. Use of water based paints and pastels. As well as various ways of creating a 'dramatic' and 'arresting' painting.

 Day One

  • Introduction to Veronica's working methods and her influences then view examples of her work.
  • Exploring the grounds with a painters eye.
  • Painting demonstration.
  • Group exploration of different materials and techniques

LUNCH

  • Group working in the grounds - It is a good idea to choose one view and to make repeated studies using different materials and techniques in order to arrive at a good body of work and also to contrast the effects of varied materials.

Day Two

  • Appraisal of yesterday's work and discussion.
  • Exploring texture - group will make a series of rubbings and  replicate these textures in paint using different techniques.
  • Choice of either; mixed media painting, making a picture using a variety of different materials,(Pastels, water based paints, chalks etc) or continue working with oils and developing your technique.

LUNCH

  • Work on final A3 size piece to incorporate a variety of the skills and techniques taught over the last two days.
  • Final appraisal.

What does it cost and how do I book?

The course will cost £125, which includes lunch but not your accommodation which leaves you free to book what ever room you wish. (There will be no more than 6 students on the course.)

Small doubles / singles  - £94 / £85
