Gliffaes is delighted to be hosting Thomas Webb, cellar-master of Thelma Mountain Vineyards in Stellenbosch and Sutherland Estate in Elgin, two prestigious South African wineries, for a tasting and dinner on Friday 9th October 2015.
Thelema and Sutherland Wines
Thomas’s father, Gyles Webb, started the winery at Thelema in 1983 when he took over an over grown fruit farm on the slopes of the Simonsberg in the heart South Africa’s most significant wine region, Stellenbosch. Within 5 years they had released their first wines and by the mid 90’s demand for their wines was out stripping supply. The estate grows 5 types of red grapes and 5 types of whites grapes with their chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon being the stars of the show. In 2000 Thelema bought Sutherland, a farm planted with apples in the Elgin Valley. Thelema planted Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Grenache, and Pinot Noir. These grapes are harvested and transported to the Thelema Mountain winery for vinification and bottling under the “Thelema Sutherland” label.
Thelema was recently voted as one of the world’s top 100 wine estates.
Dinner and Tasting
Following in the same format of many successful wine dinners at Gliffaes we will decide upon a menu to compliment a selection of wines from Thelema and Sutherland and during each course we will ask Thomas to talk about the wines, the estates and his approach to winemaking. This is not a lecture on viticulture but a fun evening of great food and wine with a chance to learn a little from a master of his craft.
We will probably begin with an aperitif and some canapés before sitting down to a four course dinner, with each course being accompanied by a different wine. Once we have decided on the menu I will publish it on this page.
Tickets are limited and cost £70 per person. It will be certainly worth your while to stay the night or arrange for a taxi! The evning will begin at 7.30pm. Please call us to book on 01874 730 371 or you can buy tickets on line via our gift voucher system. (6th option down) This dinner will not be suitable for vegetarians.
Thanks to Patrick Pigny of Enotria Wines for all his help in arranging this evening.
