An empty courtyard on what should be a busy Mothers’ Day
We should be, like most restaurants, welcoming many people for Mothers’ Day Lunch and Afternoon Tea but the only visitors I find at Gliffaes are my neighbour’s sheep who keep climbing over the boundary wall.
The Chancellor’s announcement on Friday evening where he told us the government would be covering 80% of employee salaries was very welcome and will ensure that we are able to keep all our magnificent staff on the books until we are able to re-open.
We know that making a definite booking is difficult at present. We are now offering what I am calling a ‘Loyalty Voucher’. These are for sale in multiples of £100 (valid for 24 months) and when cashed in at Gliffaes will buy the holder £115 worth of goods and services and if paying for accommodation will get you an upgrade on arrival, subject to availability. Get yours here.
Tuesday 17th March 2020
It’s with a very heavy heart that we have closed Gliffaes Hotel today in response to the guidance given, by the politicians, to the public; “Stay out of bars and restaurants and cancel all non-essential travel”.This is as good as ordering us to close. The telephone has been ringing with guests cancelling their bookings over the last few days and we can’t afford to keep open a fully staffed hotel for a handful of intrepid travellers. We have had to lay off our lovely loyal staff and put them on a small retainer until life returns to normal.
How long are we planning to stay shut for? I don’t think anybody really knows but certainly until the end of March and being realistic I think it will be for longer. Thank you so much to all those people we have been contacting to cancel their bookings, you have all been very understanding and supportive.
Should I book a room on-line?
At present, I have only closed the on-line booking system until the end of March and I leave it up to you to book in advance and if you have to cancel the booking you will suffer no penalty. I think it is better for you to make a booking and we will contact you with a least a weeks’ notice if we can’t honour it.
Fear not, we are in a reasonable position to weather this storm for a while although support from the government in any form would really help. If you are on our email database I will keep you updated of the position. Once again a huge thank you and we really look forward to welcoming old friends and new faces once all this is over.
In the meantime, I have a lot of wood to chop.
