Tuesday 19th May – Still closed but for how long?
There is a distinct lack of advice coming from the authorities as to what hotels, pubs and restaurants should be doing to plan for the future. However, I think there are some assumptions we can make that should inform us as to how hospitality might emerge from the lock down.
§ The Chancellor can’t afford to pay our wages forever. The furlough scheme is due to finish at the end of July with the scheme to move into some form of tapering level of support from August. Therefore we should plan to open in early August.
§ I think it’s safe to assume that social distancing will apply to establishments and we will have to instigate enhanced hygiene protocols, new working practices and space our guests out in public areas. If we have to keep to 2m between tables (Germany recommend 1.5m and the W.H.O. just 1m) Gliffaes will be able to use 7 or 8 tables in the dining room. This will mean we will not be able to let more than 7 or 8 of our 23 rooms.
§ People venturing out after months of lockdown while excited to get out will also be understandably cautious and will want to see that we are taking the situation seriously and are managing guest numbers in a workable fashion. The limited availability of rooms and tables in the restaurant should reassure you if you are intending to make a booking.
Limited Opening for August and September
To begin with, this is how I intend to open Gliffaes; seven rooms only for the first few weeks of August and September so we can feel our way in this new way of taking care of our guests. As things change or restrictions are lifted it will be easier and safer to open up more rooms rather than be tempted to open too many rooms, to begin with, and overcrowd the hotel.
Should I book a room?
I think it is better for you to make a booking if you wish and we will contact you with a least a weeks’ notice if we can’t honour it and we have waived our normal 48 hour cancellation period, for the time being, so you can cancel or move your booking whenever you like. Please book directly with us either via phone or the on-line system. I don’t intend to sell any rooms via Booking.com etc.
Fear not, we are in a reasonable position to weather this storm for a while although support from the government in any form would really help. If you are on our email database I will keep you updated of the position. Once again a huge thank you and we really look forward to welcoming old friends and new faces once all this is over.
