While the hotel was closed in January Susie and I took a short drive west along the A40 to the Pembrokeshire Coast, to the village of Newport, smack in the middle of the Pembrokeshire National Park. This is one of our favourite spots in the whole of the UK and thankfully has not yet been discovered by the masses.
Beaches, mountains, deep wooded valleys lined with oaks all wrapped up in a long craggy coast, that’s Pembrokeshire. There is such a feast for the senses here and plenty to see and do.
Instead of coming to Wales for just a weekend why not make a week of it? You could do a lot worse than spending a few days at Gliffaes Hotel, in the Brecon Beacons National Park before heading East to Newport and the Pembrokeshire National Park for another few days. But where to stay in Newport?
Llys Meddyg in Newport is owned and run by Ed and Lou Skyes who have a keen eye for detail inside their eight bedrooms and a real passion for fabulous food in their restaurant. We had two very comfortable nights and enjoyed fabulous meals cooked by Matt the chef. Ed is very keen on making his own charcuterie and we had some of his perfect Brassola as a starter. At breakfast I caught Ed coming in with eggs he had just collected from Lou’s hens.
In perfect winter sunshine one morning we climbed Carn Ingli right behind the hotel (pictured above) before going to the Sloop Inn at Porthgain to sit in the sun and enjoy a bowl of mussels. We then went out to Strumble Head and watched the seals swimming in the clear blue water below the light house. Dinner at Llys Meddyg was then the end to a perfect day.
