Art at Gliffaes

Hannah Firmin, perhaps most famous for being the hand behind the beautifully illustrated covers of Alexander McCall-Smith’s ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ novels, now calls Crickhowell her home and we are incredibly pleased to lay claim to several of her wonderful prints at our Brecon hotel.

Hannah Firmin studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art and since then has worked as a freelance illustrator and printmaker. As well as working with numerous magazines, newspapers, publishers and design groups; Hannah also produces private commissions and exhibits regularly at the Tower Gallery in Crickhowell.

Having illustrated all of Alexander McCall Smith’s ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ novels, in 2004 Hannah won Best Book Cover of the Year at the British Book Awards for the first of the novels’ covers.

Hannah is, first and foremost, a print maker and works in relief media- using either lino, vinyl or wood as the engraving/cutting material, and often combining the print with paint and collage.

Here at Gliffaes were are lucky enough to have some of Hannah’s prints proudly on display in the hotel, and we thought we’d give you a little virtual tour:

Here at Gliffaes, James and Susie have been buying Welsh art for the hotel for over a decade and always try to support local artists as much as possible. It is a pleasure to work so closely with such talented local artists as Hannah, and we truly cherish the opportunity to display her prints at our Crickhowell hotel.

You can learn more about Hannah’s art here or, to see it for yourself, you can book here to see Hannah’s work up close and personal at our Brecon accommodation.
