At the start of 2020, before the pandemic and its ensuing chaos hit, Gliffaes committed to donating a £1 for every room night sold to local tree-planting charity, Stump Up for Trees. This meant if you stayed 3 nights we would give £3. In a normal year this would have raised well over £5000. In addition to this, we added an optional £1.50 to everyone’s bill on checking-out, so that our guests could give something back to this beautiful area they hopefully enjoyed. We have called this project, ‘Room for Trees’ and hope to roll it out to other hospitality venues across the Brecon Beacons when life begins again.
Although we were only open for about 110 days in 2020 and albeit at a much-reduced level between the hotel and our guests we raised over £2800 pounds which has now been given over to the charity to help with tree planting within the Brecon Beacons as soon as restrictions are lifted. At a cost of around £4.50 to source, plant and care for 12 years per tree this amounts to over 600 trees going into the ground.
This is exciting times for tree planting in Wales. So may local people have expressed a keen interest to help Stump up for Trees in whatever they can. Landowners are coming forward to offer land for tree planting and businesses and individuals are helping out with donations large and small. With the Welsh government so far behind in its tree-planting targets it is up to us to cut through the red tape and get trees into the ground.

I am sure that it is the same everywhere. Lockdown again, and how do we use the time productively without spending too much precious cash when there is nothing coming in. At Gliffaes there is never a shortage of things to do. With 33 acres of grounds and an old Victorian building, there are plenty...

A bit of fun down by the river I was inspired by a picture of a swing I saw in ‘Country Life’ and went to investigate further on line but discovered that the said swing was nearly £500, so I though we would simply make our own. Several years ago we felled a large Western...

Never seen the River Usk as high The recent flooding in the Usk, Wye and Severn catchments has been covered extensively across all news channels so I am not to repeat all that news. The local town of Crickhowell was badly effected over the past weekend where the Usk broke its banks around the area...

We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
