Intimate, Traditional and Family Run – sums up our Christmas
Christmas is a very relaxed, friendly and family time at Gliffaes with many of our regular guests returning year after year. The house is decorated traditionally with holly, mistletoe and ivy from the garden and a huge 18 foot Christmas tree dominates the hall.
We suggest you arrive in good time for tea on Christmas eve giving you a chance to settle in, un pack and maybe a quick walk before it gets dark.
Festivities begin after dinner on Christmas eve with a round of carol singing attended by locals and guests alike all around the piano. Led by local farmer and accomplished singer, John Games, with Linda Games playing the piano. This has been a long standing tradition at Gliffaes for many years with sausage rolls and mince pies served at ‘half time’ to keep up the singers strength. A collection is made for a local charity during the interval.
There is normally a midnight mass on offer at our beautiful local church in Tretower, just a mile and half down the road.
Christmas Day Lunch
Christmas day lunch is a sumptuous cold buffet. Think whole poached salmon, crevettes, warm honey glazed ham, oysters, homemade breads, interesting salads and some festive puddings and cheese. Follow this with a walk along the river, a slice of Christmas cake and then a quick snooze in front of the fire to get your strength up for dinner. We have a small number of places available for non-residents and the cost for Christmas Lunch is £75 per person.
Christmas Day Dinner
Dinner is when we serve the traditional Christmas dinner (with choice of either turkey or goose) with everyone dressing up in Black Tie with plenty of balloons, hats and crackers to jolly the proceedings along. We have a small number of places for free for non-residents and the cost for Christmas Dinner is £80 per person.
You might like to go to the traditional Boxing Day meet of the fox hounds in front of the Angel Hotel in Abergavenny first thing in the morning (10.30am) for a slice of local colour. On Boxing Day there is another Buffet on offer for lunch with usually roast beef in place of the poached salmon offered on Christmas day. Amazingly enough people still have sufficient space for dinner which is offered from the a la carte menu.

From the beginning of December once the hotel has been decorated and the trees and lights are up we add a touch of Christmas magic to our daily afternoon tea offering. It’s still the same buffet style tea but we add turkey and cranberry sandwiches to our sandwich selection, we have a spiced plum jam to go with the scones and cream, you can choose to have a local blend of Christmas tea (think cloves, mandarin and cinnamon ) and we ring the changes with our homemade cake choices with some indulgent Christmas style fancies. Bring your friends, sit by the fire indulge in a great British tradition and why not have a glass of champagne to?
