Just last month we received the news that Crickhowell High Street had been awarded the title of Best High Street in the UK. We’re one of the hotels in Wales that take great delight in supporting local business and with the festive season almost upon us it’s the perfect time to provide you with some gift inspiration – courtesy of our award-winning high street.
The Great British High Street Awards aim to create greater awareness of the value in supporting your local high street. They believe that in a changing world, the well-established high street can still meet the challenging demands of the modern consumer and that by running initiatives such as these, they can begin to reconnect communities to local business – in order to provide a solution that won’t cost the earth.
Bucking the trend of the high street demise, Crickhowell have been recognised for their hard work in championing grassroots initiatives. And with the opportunity for present-purchasing abundant, we thought it only right to give you our top three favourite shops on our newly-famous high street.
As they so perfectly put it themselves, ‘Book-ish is that bookshop that you thought didn’t exist any more, but wished did.’ and it lives in Crickhowell High Street. With a wide range of literature- from History to Entertainment and Fiction to Wellbeing, Book-ish has something for everyone. Rummage around in search of a hidden gem for somebody special or grab a novel and retire to the comfort of our Drawing Room, just a short drive away.
With the Black Mountains sitting right on our doorstep, it’s only right that there should be a go-to store for all your adventures in the great outdoors. Crickhowell Adventure is your one-stop-shop for all things clothing and equipment. There is so much to be said for a refreshing walk in the beautiful hills and even more to be said for some well-earned relaxation afterwards – where better to do so than at our Brecon Beacons Hotel? Give your loved one the gift of good health this Christmas and choose a present that will leave them feeling a little less guilty after all that Christmas pudding.
Crickhowell High Street is home to the first zero-waste shop in Wales. Founded on the importance of preserving our natural planet, Natural Weigh are challenging our reliance on plastics when it comes to food consumption. The shop doesn’t use any plastic packaging and they stock additive-free, organic foods because as they so aptly put it: ‘There is no PLANet B’.
We don’t have to convince you, let the awards speak for themselves – Crickhowell High Street is truly a special place to shop and with our Country Hotel just around the corner, Crickhowell serves as the perfect destination for some shopping.
If you’re in the area make sure you book into our Christmas Afternoon Tea, pop in for a bite to eat or book into one of our 23 charming rooms. Of all the hotels in Wales, we offer the perfect retreat this season, contact us here or call us on 01874 730 371 to find out more.
We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
