Thanks to our splendid location, Gliffaes is the ideal Brecon accommodation and the perfect space to rest your head after a wonderful day exploring the Brecon Beacons. One of our favourite festivals is back this February!
Crickhowell’s annual walking festival returns for 2018 and will run from 24th February to 4th March – we have comprised the following hints and tips to help anyone wishing to attend.
Crickhowell Walking Festival is beloved by locals and visitors alike. These 9 days of guided walks and events in and around Crickhowell and the Black Mountains are a delight for all who take part. With over 90 walks listed, you can get tickets from the festival box office so don’t miss out – this is a rare chance to discover the area as you make new friends.
Anyone who has a ticket can attend the festival. With walks being held of varying difficulties, there is something for novice walkers to keen ramblers. The lengths of the walks depend on the ability required to participate. We would advise against going on a walk beyond your ability. Some walks are even suitable for dogs.
The walks are led by locals who have an unrivalled knowledge of the area. Thanks to their passion and expertise, you will discover parts of the Black Mountains you would never usually find on your own. Not only is having a route leader important for safety reasons, but it also allows you to explore the countryside without the stresses of navigation – they offer great company too! Gliffaes’ owner, James will be leading a walk from Gliffaes on Tuesday 27th February, starting at 10.30am and back in time for the famous Gliffaes tea and Susie will be repeating the same walk on Thursday 1st March
Most of the walks take place on moorland and open mountains. With such locations being open to the elements, it is of the utmost importance that you wear appropriate clothing. Think walking boots (not trainers), a rucksack, hat, gloves, warm clothing and layers, a jacket or fleece, a waterproof jacket and trousers. Don’t forget food and a hot flask! And because we hold our reputation as one of the most welcoming places to stay in Brecon close to our heart, we can even arrange a packed lunch for you if you stay over.
We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
