Cutting Down Gliffaes’ Christmas Trees

Every year at our lovely Brecon Hotel, we cut down our own Christmas trees to feature in the hotel. You can’t beat a freshly cut Christmas tree – the smell, the look and most of all, the festive feel it brings to a room.

I have been known for being a bit of Christmas Grinch when it comes to decorating our Brecon Accommodation and putting up the Christmas trees, leaving it until the last possible moment cursing as I try to untie tangled strings of lights. In my defence I would say that erecting a 16 to 18 foot tree in our lobby is no mean feat!

Now that we have begun serving our Christmas Afternoon Teas from the 1st December we have made it our mission to get the trees up and get Gliffaes looking and feeling festive by the 1st.

I have learnt the hard way that the Christmas tree that lasts the longest inside a warm building and will not drop its needles even after 4 weeks is the Nordmann Fir (Abies Nordmann ). Also known as the Caucasian Fir as it is indigenous to the mountains South and East of the Black Sea. If it’s left to it’s own devices, the Nordmann Fir will grow to an impressive 50 to 60 metres and is often planted in parks and gardens as a popular ornamental tree.

This Monday morning I headed over to Penpont Estate near Sennybridge, with tree expert and owner of Penpont, Gavin Hogg, to choose a pair of trees for Gliffaes. After looking at all of the lovely different trees, I chose the two ones that I liked and Gavin cut them down, trimmed the bases and loaded them into my trailer within 10 minutes!

Once back at Gliffaes, we needed to do a little more measuring and trimming before the heavy and awkward job of getting them inside. The first tree is placed in the sitting room and the second lifted onto the reception desk where it graces the staircase up to the first floor. Secured with strong cord, I then put damp sand into the buckets they stand in. This allows us to water the trees throughout December so they stay looking fresh and healthy.

It is now the turn of our more creative staff; Rhiannon, Jurgita and Jennie to add the decorations and LED lights! So, when you now come to Gliffaes you will greeted by the lovely smell of fresh pine trees and twinkling lights.
