After both of our “Improve Your River Fishing” courses were cancelled last year due to the wet summer, I was really excited to be running the first one of 2013. It is always a very rewarding course, both for the participants and me as instructor. It was also nice to welcome back Charles, a fly angler who had attended one of my beginners courses at Gliffaes in 2011.
With six anglers ready and raring to go, we started off on the lawn with a bit of casting tuition. They seized the opportunity to develop their casting further in terms of both skill and understanding and great progress was made.
Next, it was off to the river to begin the fishing skills and watercraft part of the course. The rest of the two days were spent on the river, learning and practising and I had time to give quality 1-1 coaching to everyone just to make sure they had correctly understood each of the techniques I had taught them.
All in all it was a very successful weekend and, while it was difficult to get an exact number of the fish caught, I would estimate that it was in the region of 40 to 50 with a few decent fish of up to the 2lb mark included in that.
I look forward to seeing you soon on one of our courses.

“This was my 2nd fly fishing course with Frank at Gliffaes Hotel the first being 2 years ago. This recent course was excellent. Frank is a very patient, informative and enthusiastic tutor. I came away at the end of 3 days clearly understanding the Duo and Czech methods.
Your lunches were great and the hotel/grounds and staff were as always fabulous. A great 3 days-and the weather was superb.”
“Course exceeded my expectations, Setting is fantastic, staff a hotel friendly and helpful. Frank is an outstanding tutor”.
Frank will be hosting one more Improve your River Fly Fishing this year at Gliffaes on 12th – 14th August. There will be no more than six students on the course and we currently have three places left. More details on costs and equipment required can be found here. You don’t have to be a resident of the hotel to take part.
Keep on eye on the website for dates for 2014.
We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
