Gliffaes has long been known for its collection of magnificent trees, a superb collection of both native and exotic specimens. The collection all too clearly shows the passion and enthusiasm for trees by previous guardians of this unique spot in the National Park. Not least Susie’s father, Nick Brabner, who planted a great many specimens and was responsible for a large tree planting project during 2000.
Over the last 12 months Susie and I have been working with arboriculturalist, Steve Clark, to develop a tree strategy for the whole of Gliffaes. The first strand of this was to make safe a number of trees and then Steve undertook the huge task of identifying and naming all of the trees. The baton was then passed to Susie and I to label as many of the trees and shrubs as we could. This we have pretty much done.
To celebrate our small achievements and to show off our tree knowledge, we have decided to give two guided tree walks this autumn followed by a free light lunch in the hotel. We would also like to get your thoughts on how we might develop ‘our trees’ into something more guests can enjoy. We also might have got the names wrong!
The two dates that we will be conducting these tree walks on are, Sunday 21st October and Wednesday 24th October, we have chosen these dates as the autumn colours should be at their very best. The walks will kick off at 11.00am and should last about an hour and a half. Back inside the hotel for soup and a sausage roll. Each walk is limited to 25 people and booking is essential. Please call reception on 01874 730371 and tell them which day you would like to come. Dogs on leads are most welcome.
We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
