November is upon us; all of the team at our Brecon Beacons hotel have their sights firmly set on the start of the festive season. For some, this begins now in November, for others it begins as soon as we greet our first Christmas guest through the door.
In our latest blog, we will be discussing the benefits of a Christmas retreat.
By spending christmas away from home and out of routine, you save yourself stress in many ways. No uninvited guests popping over, no need to prepare the house or decorate if you don’t wish to – a Christmas retreat is just that, a break from the routine you have been used to every year. Unless of course, you make a habit of joining us at Gliffaes for the 25th, or like to enjoy a new destination every December. A Christmas retreat offers next to zero stress levels for all involved (don’t forget to pack gifts and essentials, and of course the obligatory fluffy festive jumper). Stress is a slow burner that can build throughout the year, and it is safe to say that no-one wants to endure last-minute dashes to the shop for that pint of milk or loaf of bread. Best of all, you can have the stress of no clearing up and absolutely no dishes – if you take a Christmas retreat it’s all taken care of.
See new faces, make new friends, be looked after. Every Christmas held at our country house begins with a warm welcome and continues with a cheery and inclusive atmosphere. The aroma of delicious food, festive scents and the soothing Welsh air will follow you around the property; never overbearing, but gently reminding you that the festive season is well and truly upon us. As we welcome people from all walks of life into the property you could find yourself speaking to someone with similar interests or sharing a cup of tea with someone whose work fascinates you. Christmas is a time for sharing and by coming together to inhabit our country house you get to learn, laugh and socialise. We’ve often seen newly acquainted groups of guests taking a chilly stroll around the grounds, or down to the River Usk in the mornings.
By venturing away from home, you can experience Christmas in a new environment. Crickhowell and the Brecon Beacons in particular look iridescent during snowfall, and it truly has to be seen to be believed. While we can’t promise a white Christmas each year, we can promise that spending one Christmas with us won’t be enough – many of our guests return throughout the year, some even in the warmer months, and they are the first to snap up some of our rooms for the festive season when they become available. As well as experiencing traditions from another county, town or area, a Christmas retreat gives you the gift of time, quality time at that. Relax with your loved ones, warm yourselves by a roaring log fire and sip on your drink of choice. Your Christmas retreat can be the start of a new tradition, be that making more time for each other and family members you don’t see as often as you’d like, or by promising a new destination each year.

We are still unsure as to when we can re-open. I think it will be around the 24th May.
Gliffaes will not be open for outdoor dining only – I am afraid the numbers don’t stack up for us.
Mark Drakeford, The Welsh First Minister has given no definitive date for the opening of indoor hospitality in Wales.
This matter is further confused by the local elections on the 6th May. If Labour is returned to power he tells us that he will be minded to consider the opening of indoor hospitality on the 17th May and I guess he will give us about a week’s notice taking us to the 24th May.
Online booking is available and reception will be staffed from 9am to midday from Monday to Saturday, so please do call us.
Thank you for all your support and we hope to see you in May and beyond.
James & Susie Suter and all the team at Gliffaes.
