Activities During Spring In Crickhowell

Get the sun in your face and the wind in your hair. There is nothing like a day in the outdoors to get you feeling invigorated and at peace with yourself. Here is a short list of six things to get you off your sofa this Spring.

1.Go For A Proper Walk

Dust off your walking boots, spring has sprung – get out and experience it.

The opportunities for walking in the Brecon Beacons are almost endless. Mountains, moorland, ridges, valleys, canal banks, rivers and woodlands we have them all. The Brecon Beacons are the closest real mountains to you if you live anywhere south of Birmingham. We are just two and half hours from west London.

We can advise on routes, mark up your map and send you off with a packed lunch as well as drying your kit when you come back. You could even take part in the Crickhowell Walking Festival. (25th Feb -5th March), ten days of guided walks led by locals and always a sell out.

2. Star Gazing In The Dark Sky Reserve

In our small island light pollution spoils the chances of seeing the wonders of the night sky in its full glory, happily the Brecon Beacons does not suffer from light pollution due to its small population and has, in fact, been designated a ‘Dark Sky Reserve’.

On the evening of March 24th at the National Park Visitor’s Centre just outside Brecon there will be experts on hand to guide you through the late winter night sky and they will even have a mobile planetarium in case the conditions are not perfect for star gazing. Find out more here.

3. Go Adventure Fly Fishing With The Wye And Usk Passport.

Fly fishing season begins on March 3rd on both rivers and as the days warm up we can get short and furious hatches of March Browns around midday making for some frantic sport for short bursts. The Wye and Usk Foundation have spent many years opening up the small tributaries that flow in to the two main rivers and in doing so they have created many more fishing opportunities in some exciting and quite remote spots. You can buy day tickets and get instructions on how to find the wild streams  on their website along with plenty more information on fishing on the Wye and Usk.  Need someone to guide you? Why not take an expert along? Call Frank Williams, who is always keen to lend a hand at our South Wales hotel.

4. A Day Lambing On An Organic Farm

A ‘no holds barred’ day in the life of an organic sheep farmer in the beautiful Brecon Beacons at lambing time. I cannot promise you will witness a lambing but you will be able to help with a range of daily tasks: feeding lambs, bedding down, marking, moving and collecting eggs. You will be free to ask as many questions as you wish and Paul & Liz will be happy to talk about organic farming and their alternative energy initiatives. A tasty homemade lunch is included and then you will be free to walk around the farm to enjoy the stunning views. All the details can be found here.

5. Brecon Beacons Landscape Photography Tuition

A day out in the Beacons with a professional photographer, Neil Mansfield, learning how best to photograph the dramatic landscapes. These can be either one to one or two to one sessions, which ever you prefer. Hopefully you will come away with something good enough to print and hang on your wall. More information here.
