Now in its 10th year the Crickhowell Walking Festival goes from strength to strength, offering 95 guided walks over the nine days to suit walkers of all abilities. All the walks are led by locals so there is no need to concern yourself with navigation and it is a fantastic way to explore the Black Mountains and the surrounding country side getting to places you wouldn’t find without local knowledge. Gliffaes would make a very comfortable base for the festival with a hot bath, open fires and a great dinner awaiting your return from the hills. Take advantage of our early Spring Offer which includes a packed lunch to take to the hills and afternoon tea on your return. To see the range of walks on offer and to book places see the Festival website. I will be leading a walk from Gliffaes on Tuesday 27th February.
Take a day to explore the largest natural lake in all of Wales, Llangorse Lake. Just a twenty-minute drive from Gliffaes, the peaceful lake is positioned between the central Beacons and the Black Mountains. Visitors can either take their own light craft (with a permit secured beforehand) or rent a boat to go on a leisurely row around the lake. There is also a superb bird hide that can be accessed from a short walk from the lovely church at Llangasty.
For a traditional trip down memory lane, the Brecon Mountain Railway is sure to appeal to all looking for a taste of the simple life! Whilst you stay at Gliffaes, jump aboard a vintage steam train from the main station at Pant, which is just a thirty-minute drive from our hotel in the Brecon Beacons, and take the journey into the National Park, taking in the viewpoint others would have had centuries ago.
The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal offer some of the finest and most idyllic vistas to take in on a perfect countryside walk that will get your head out of the stresses of modern life and feet firmly back on the floor. Being just a short journey away from our Brecon Beacons hotel, the Brecon Canal is the perfect location to mosey along either on foot or bike. Being surrounded by such an expanse of nature the 35 miles stretch of walkway is teeming with wildlife – a true birdwatchers paradise with many sightings of Red Kites, Buzzards and Herons. The stretch from Llangynidr (our closest village) to Talybont makes for a perfect walk or cycle and the village of Talybont has two good pubs for lunch. It is also possible to hire an electric boat from the canal basin in Brecon.
For the night owls amongst that are looking for a unique experience during a stay at our hotel in the Crickhowell, perhaps consider an evening of stargazing in the Brecon Beacons.
